The Movie in 3 Sentences

  • After the sudden death of the Pope, Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with overseeing the conclave, the secret gathering where cardinals elect the next leader of the Catholic Church. As voting begins, hidden scandals, political rivalry, and personal ambitions emerge among the leading candidates. What appears to be a spiritual process gradually becomes a tense power struggle filled with conspiracy and unexpected revelations.
  • The music and the cinematography adds to the well-written script. Stillness, symmetry, robes, corridors, and faces held under quiet pressure, shadow and contrast used in the overall composition just looked like a piece of Rembrandt’s painitng.
  • Fiennes’s acting was 10/10

My Top 3 Quotes

  • Benitez: I am what God made me. And perhaps it is my difference that will make me more useful.
  • Lawrence: Certainty is the great enemy of unity. Certainty is the deadly enemy of tolerance. Even Christ was not certain at the end. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" he cried out in his agony at the ninth hour on the cross. Our faith is a living thing precisely because it walks hand-in-hand with doubt. If there was only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery. And therefore, no need for faith. Let us pray that God will grant us a Pope who doubts. And let him grant us a Pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and who carries on.
