Dune: Part One follows Paul Atreides as his noble family takes control of Arrakis, a desert planet that produces the universe’s most valuable resource: spice. As political betrayal tears his family apart, Paul is pushed from sheltered heir into exile, where his visions begin pointing toward a much larger destiny among the Fremen. The film is essentially the first half of a mythic rise-to-power story, but it treats that setup with enormous seriousness and scale.
Villeneuve is one of those directors who really understands how to make things feel massive. The moment I saw the sandworms in the trailer, I knew I had to watch this on the biggest screen possible—preferably IMAX. Everything feels monumental: the worms, the spaceships, the ornithopters, the architecture, the landscapes, the sound design, and Hans Zimmer’s score. It is epic in the most literal sense of the word.
What impressed me even more is that all that spectacle never completely overwhelms the characters. Beneath the scale, there are still intimate relationships, quiet moments, and genuine emotional stakes. The movie manages to make you feel both the immensity of this universe and the vulnerability of the people moving through it.
I haven’t read the book, but after watching this, it suddenly felt like the perfect time to dive in before Part Two.
