The show in 3 sentences
- An animated sci-fi drama about a world where human consciousness can be uploaded into the internet as a digital mind “Uploaded Intelligence” - that can live in networks, move between computers, and potentially become more intelligent than biological humans. Multiple uploaded people emerge - some that want to destroy humanity and some that want to prevent that - and the story expands to uploaded minds reshaping civilization.
- There were some classic anime-style fighting scenes, but overall the plot was tight. It took a classic sci-fi idea (”uploading your mind to a computer”) and followed it to its logical conclusion without diluting it with romance, too much action or other unnecessary plotting devices. It gets into the questions like: If a copy of your mind thinks and feels exactly like you, is it still you? What happens to love, death, power and inequality when some people can become effectively immortal software?
- It did take a strong turn toward action anime where it becomes “my energy blast is stronger than yours” for a number of episodes, which brought back some nostalgia which I didn’t mind.. but I liked the first part of the show where it was asking deeply philosophical question imbued in family drama and grief.
