• Design is never neutral. The world is "working exactly as designed," which means designers can't pretend they're just making screens or features—they're shaping people's behavior and, ultimately, society.
• The book shifts the conversation away from aesthetics and toward ethics. Instead of asking whether something is usable or beautiful, Monteiro pushes designers to ask whether it's causing harm through things like addictive experiences, privacy violations, exclusion, or manipulative business models.
• The biggest takeaway for me is that designers have a responsibility to speak up. Monteiro encourages us to push back on harmful work, refuse unethical projects when possible, and treat design as a civic responsibility—not just a service for clients or employers.
• A little bit controversial because of his language trash-talking some of the companies (which rightfully should be criticized), and his behavior during his talk… but nevertheless, I agree with his points. Of course, easier said than done.
