The Movie in 3 Sentences

  • The movie starts with “The Dude”, a laid-back slacker bowler, who gets mistaken for a wealthy man with the same name. Two thugs break into The Dude’s apartment demanding money owed by the millionaire’s wife Bunny, and one of them pees on The Dude’s rug. The Dude goes to the rich Lebowski to ask for compensation for his rug, but he gets pulled into delivery job to pay ransom money to Bunny’s kidnapper. As The Dude is trying to do his “job”, his bowling friend Walter insists that they keep the ransom and hand over a fake bag, which makes everything worse.
  • It became a cult classic because it takes a classic noir detective story - mistaken identity, a femme fatale, ransom money, corrupt rich people, and replaces the hard-boiled detective with a guy who mostly wants to drink White Russian and be left alone.
  • In the culture of endless productivity, “The Dude”, who seems lazy and nihilistic, is ironically the most moral character of all.

How the Movie Changed Me

  • Was it worth re-watching it on 420? Hell yea.
  • Don’t win, don’t dominate, don’t solve everything — just abide. I know that was the vibe that dominated subculture of the US, and dare I say it came from this movie? Everyone is pretending the situation is serious - huge drama around money, pride, sex, and status, while The Dude just wants his rug back.
