The Happiest Baby on the Block

A practical guide to soothing newborns

AuthorHarvey Karp

The Book in 3 Sentences

  • The first three months is “fourth trimester.” Newborns still crave womb-like sensations after birth, so crying is often less about “bad habits” and more about an overwhelmed baby needing familiar cues.
  • The famous 5 S’s: swaddle, side/stomach position while held, shush, swing, and suck. Combine these cues to trigger what Karp calls the baby’s “calming reflex.” Side/stomach is for soothing while holding the baby, not for sleep; babies should sleep on their backs on a safe sleep surface.
  • This guy is a marketing genius - published a book to make himself the subject-matter expert, and then make a premium product SNOO to sell to new parents… damn.
