The Movie in 3 Sentences

  • I started watching True Detective because a few friends whose taste I trust kept recommending it, and once I started, I couldn’t stop.
  • The first season follows two Louisiana detectives, Marty Hart and Rust Cohle, as they investigate the ritualistic murder of a young woman whose body is discovered posed with antlers and surrounded by strange stick sculptures. The case begins in 1995, but the story is framed through interviews with both men in 2012, gradually revealing that the original investigation may not have ended as cleanly as everyone thought. As the season unfolds, more victims, suspects, and unsettling connections begin to surface.
  • It’s definitely not a fast-paced crime thriller. The show moves slowly and deliberately, but that never made it feel boring—in fact, I was completely hooked. The murder mystery is almost secondary to what the case does to Marty and Rust over the years. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are both excellent, but McConaughey is especially impressive in how differently he plays Cohle in 1995 and 2012. The Louisiana landscape also feels like a character of its own: humid, decaying, and slightly apocalyptic, as if nature is slowly reclaiming everything. By the end, the show starts borrowing imagery and tension from horror, making the investigation feel increasingly surreal and dangerous. It’s a remarkably self-contained season, and probably one of the best examples of how good a slow-burn crime drama can be.
