- World War Z is a zombie novel written as a global oral history. Max Brooks frames the book as interviews collected after humanity has survived the “Zombie War,” with survivors from many countries explaining what happened before, during, and after the collapse.
- The zombies are less the point than the systems under stress. The book uses the outbreak to examine government denial, military failure, misinformation, class inequality, refugee crises, black markets, trauma, and how different cultures respond when institutions break.
- It was actually an absurdly accurate depiction of how Covid had spread throughout the world, and how different governments (and some military) reacted to the pandemic. I read the whole thing on the flight back home from Korea as the patient number was going up on hourly basis.. scary.
